The 5th Anniversary. What to Give?
Five years ago tonight, Dallas Council member Angela Hunt went on her blog and sent out the alarm. Something’s going on and it doesn’t look right. Only one other council member stood with her to voice their concerns. Both had just come out of a council meeting where on the consent agenda, an item for gas drilling was voted for approval by the entire council but for two votes, hers and Mitch Rasansky. The council had been sandbagged by City Manager Mary Suhm about taking the $34 million check and cashing it. Some people have even said that Suhm told the council to ‘go out and find a way to cut $34 million out of the budget, and I’ll give it back.” What do you do?
Hunt has toughed it out for four terms sometimes being the lone voice to ask the right questions and make the one ‘No’ vote of reason. It’s called doing the ‘right thing’ for her constituents, and the entire City of Dallas.
So on the 5th Anniversary, tradition says to give a gift of wood. It signifies strength, fortitude, solidarity. Ms. Hunt prefers to stay out of the spotlight and instead just do the job. A gift would be nice, but a sincere ‘thank you’ would be the best way to knowledge ‘the work’ she does.

Happy Fifth, Angela. Thank you for all your leadership and insightfulness on this issue, and on many other important issues, during your time of service to the citizens of Dallas. Where can we find a few more civic-minded people like you to fill some of those seats now occupied by people without the integrity or intellectual curiosity to understand what they are voting on before they vote?
