A lump of coal, a jug of benzene and us…

August 25, 2010

…crying in what some perceive as a “wilderness of indifference”. That would be the current state of affairs as Dallas will play host to the first public hearing sponsored by the EPA on September 8, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency. Subject: Coal Ash. That Dallas has been chosen as the location for this hearing is interesting in itself. But the subject matter is sure to astound and mystify those who are not used to the words COAL and TEXAS being used within the same sentence. As if we did not need another toxin to worry about here in the great state of Texas, coal ash is now on the list as being one of many toxins (2nd largest industrial waste product in the US) to continue their stranglehold on our environment. When you mention coal plants in Texas, most folks don’t even know we have them. They think of coal plants being in the Midwest and the Northeast.

Two Sunday evenings ago, 60 Minutes did a well documented story on this very subject. Watch it. Watch it again.

It’s here. It’s in our air, on our soil, and in our lives.
