Apathy will kill us all in the end

October 20, 2010

Corruption at the highest levels in the state. A state environmental commission that operates like a schizophrenic patient without medication, municipalities working on the behalf of industry, and residents who are left in the dark about their surroundings. Throw in a large dose of apathy and you have a disaster of the highest order. No situation has ever engulfed our county, and our cities like the one we face with natural gas drilling. This is not to say that we are against the drilling, WE ARE NOT. What we are saying that ever since 2005 when The Energy Act  was allowed to pass with too many loopholes benefiting the industry, our lives have dramatically changed. No knew, no one told, no one cared. They think, we don’t have time to care.

Watch this: WFAA-Pipeline dangers abound in Texas

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1:30 CITY HALL CHAMBERS-TELL DALLAS NOT TO APPROVE THIS APPLICATION FOR NATURAL GAS DRILLING UNTIL THEY REWRITE THE CURRENT GAS ORDINANCE. OTHERWISE, EXPECT A GAS WELL 300 FEET FROM YOUR HOME.

This is written so well and heartfeltly. Like a light coming on and waking us up.

The warnings are so loud and clear! Today is a very important moment in Dallas history. Some may not see it that way. But other communities to the west weren’t ever given the opportunity to speak up. Municipalities spoke “for” the citizens and the results have been devastating. Dallas can ignore the warnings. Or Dallas can heed them. I pray for the latter.

Also, before any decisions are made going forward, I would like to suggest a “tour” of Gasland to the northwest. Seeing all the tanks, monstrous FRAC ponds, the closeness to neighborhoods and homes up close and personal can be disturbing at best. Only listening to the gas operators and what they promise to do for Dallas is not very wise.

Apathy from citizens and the complexities of shale gas drilling are the friends to the natural gas industry operators. They know this all too well. Hopefully, Dallas will step back and re-write their Gas Drilling Ordinance. Take a look at the Dish, Texas, Southlake and Granbury, Texas ordinances. Study this issue in a very serious manner.

Re-write the Dallas Gas Drilling Ordinance before approving the Permit at Hensley Field. And have a Moratorium on all gas drilling until that has happened.

The future of Dallas is very much at stake.
