WFAA/BELO Broadcasting Giant in Dallas Shills/Tweets for Chesapeake Energy on TV

Beautiful hostess, hot man. What’s not to love about Chesapeake.

Janee being led to believe that this fresh water pond used for drilling is all for the good of the USA’s energy independence.

On Sunday, May 20, 2012, The Janee Show seen on Dallas Fort Worth’s #1 media giant, broadcast a segment on the ‘truth’ about gas drilling. While we find that Chesapeake Energy’s decision to sponsor Habitat for Humanity to build a home quite a noble deed, they continue the contamination of our environment. Knowing that in order to sell their product to the masses they had to make it palatable,Chesapeake was obligated to use spokesperson Julie Wilson as a balance to the beautiful, blonde, and perky Janee to sell it’s message of drilling for profits.

We are deeply troubled that Belo Broadcasting, associated with both WFAA and the Dallas Morning News decided to move forward with this infomercial for Chesapeake by not balancing the story of shale gas drilling with stories of spills, emissions, and contamination. When we have media giants using the airwaves to sponsor ‘the message’ of an industry that does not have a ‘paid advertisement’ disclaimer within the broadcast, this has overtones of a ‘deal with the devil’.

That is not a good thing.

UPDATE: WFAA did have Chesapeake Energy listed as a sponsor on the  Janee Show sponsor page as late as May 21, it has now been removed.

BPA, PCBs and other chemicals have been in the environment for 50+ years. Now we have hormone damaged humans and frogs with 6 legs. How do we know what BTEX in the air and water will do? Why not take more care with the fracking process now instead of waiting 50 years to see what trouble it causes?

We don’t know. Which is why it is a big deal that WFAA embraces Chesapeake and gives them an open platform to spread
      their misinformation.

    Dear Mr. Devlin,

I was appalled to learn how you allowed yourself, The Janee Show and your station to be duped by Chesapeake Energy into providing a one-sided infomercial disguised as an information show about hydraulic fracturing and natural gas exploration.

Chesapeake is a company without integrity. Its chairman was recently relieved of his duties in that position, though he remains as CEO, partly due to his probably criminal acts that are currently under investigation by the FBI and the SEC. The company is 68% owned by China Investment Corporation which seeks to take our natural gas that is supposed to give us “energy independence from the Middle East” to places like China and India where they are taking away American jobs.

While Chesapeake likes to pretend that it is such a good neighbor the reality is that it causes irreparable harm while lying and deceiving people into allowing it to operate in close proximity to homes, schools, daycare centers, hospitals, nursing homes, churches, places of employment, parks and recreation venues and other public places where the toxic, carcinogenic and neurotoxic chemicals it uses can contaminate water, air and soil leading to major adverse health effects, devalued real property and a devastated natural environment.

Chesapeake told Grand Prairie that its operations there could yield a $3 Billion total economic impact, produce $240 million in mineral owner royalties and produce $105 million in city and school district taxes. For 96 operatng wells in Grand Prairie, the ENTIRE industry only produced about $134,000 in royalty income in 2010, and at that rate it is going to take about 1,717+ years to equal the $240 million they told Grand Prairie citizens they would get from allowing Chesapeake to drill there.

Furthermore, they violated the Bureau of Land Management’s Texas Resources Management Plan by drilling and frac’ing their Corn Valley A1H well just 850 feet from the dam at Joe Pool Reservoir – the BLM requires a minimum setback of at least 3,000 feet. If their operation results in an earthquake or sinkhole beneath the dam footing that causes a dam failure in the middle of the night you could be looking at 10,000+ dead people and a lot of housing and other property destruction in a matter of minutes, which is precisely why the BLM requires a minimum 3,000 foot setback.

These are but a few of many examples of how the company that you allowed your show to used by demostrates, everyday, that they are not good neighbors at all, but rather are nothing more than corporate profiteers looking to make a fast buck at the public’s expense. You owe it to yourself, your station, the Janee Show and your viewers to present the other side of this story, and to expose the lies of Chesapeake and its PR machine. These guys give snake oil salesmen a good name!

I would add to the above message that the USACE asked Chesapeake to voluntarily shut down the Corn Valley A1H well in the interest of protection of the dam and the residents that live below it. Chesapeake refused. The matter is now being negotiated between the USACE attorneys and Chesapeake attorneys. A responsible company that truly does care for the health and safety of its neighbors in the community would have voluntarily shut down that well upon request instead of forcing a legal battle that is going to cost taxpayers millions (we pay the salaries of the US Army Corps of Engineers – USACE – and its attorneys.)

Chesapeake claims that they do Green Completions, but they don’t use the equipment at the beginning of flowback and so they still are venting into our airshed. They also allow the frack sand dust to fly around and into our lungs.

Reread the article in the FW Weekly (Dec 7-13,2011) about air quality which says that fracking is to blame. Wilma Subra will tell you that they are wasting millions of $$$$$$$ not recovering the stuff that makes prople sick and the air look bad.
